Kantara

The village of Kantara is situated approximately 26 miles north east of Famagusta, and 45 miles east of Kyrenia, nestled in the top of the mountain range that runs almost the length of the island.

As such, the views from the mountain drive to the village are magnificent, with every corner you turn offering a unique and stunning outlook.

Kantara Castle

Residents and regular visitors to Northern Cyprus will know Kantara is famed for its castle. A popular attraction for visitors, rich in history and with spectacular panoramic views, you can see right to the end of the Karpaz peninsula, and on a clear day mainland Turkey and Syria are in view.

The easternmost, and best preserved of the three Crusader castles in Northern Cyprus, some 700 metres above sea level, is thought to have been built by the Byzantines in the 10th century as a lookout post. The first written source mentioning the castle being in 1191 when Richard Lion-heart captured the island.

As Kantara is located some distance from the main holiday area of Kyrenia, many visitors arrive for a day trip, only to find they run out of time before they can enjoy the full beauty of this area. Not so for the residents of the village!
